I am in love with Flickr

Neil in St. James' ParkI signed up for Flickr about a year ago.  I forget why.  My account lay dormant for months at a time; I used my own install of Gallery2 to host my photos.  But while I toiled over customizing my primitive little albums, Flickr was pumping billions of dollars into improving its mechanics and UI.

I am now officially on board, and I’m uploading six years’ worth of photos to my Flickr pro account.

I’m often a photographer, but I never print my own photos.  I admire (or obsess over) them on my monitor, then archive them for safekeeping.  Flickr automates so much of what I love about digital photography, from archiving to sorting to sharing.  Printing, even, should the urge possess me.  I have hours of fawning over memories in front of me.  For instance, did you know that in 2001, I rocked “the pirate?“

I’m also a huge flickr fan.  Had a pro account and pumped a ton of Unexpected Company photos through there.  I’ve also got a personal account but haven’t been able to find the time to really fill the sucker.  I’ve always wanted to do some more work with their APIs.  I love the idea of flickr being an all purpose photo storage facility and then building something on top of that so flickr can be whatever you want it to be.

Did you catch the news that flickr announced video sharing yesterday.  I think the concept is kind of interesting (videos are ‘long photos’) but I have no idea if it will catch on.  I think the 90 sec limit will turn most people off, which may have been the intent.

Yeah, I did read about the new video capacity.  (And the increase in size limit to 20Mb—huge!)  I can’t think of a reason I’d upload a 90sec video to Flickr specifically, but like most new web trends, I predict I’ll see the value only after millions of people have experimented with the platform.

Similarly, the idea of a Tumblr is baffling to me—how is it any more elegant than a well-designed blog?  I’m still lukewarm on Twitter, although Twitter’s functionality is clear.

And finally, to show how much of a dinosaur I am, I think Tags—as implemented, not as an idea—are shit.  There has to be a more sophisticated way to implement folksonomy than glorified keywords.

I can’t wait for Web 5.0.

Neil, not only do I know that you rocked the pirate, I remember when you rocked the half-beard.

I’ve been meaning to check out the Flickr for a while.  Right now my photos are in a variety of places - piacasa, livejournal scrapbook (which blows), etc.  It’d be nice to have them all in one place.

I only just got into Flickr, and I have lots of photos to import and sort and tag and the like.  I need to set aside like 2 hours to do it all, but whenever I do a bit of it I’m always really gratified.

I wish I could have seen the half beard.
